Columbia University Pre-College Programs
About
The CSPA Summer Journalism Workshop is a long-standing tradition, now in its 45th year, designed to help secondary school students refine their skills in media and communications. Hosted on Columbia University’s campus in New York City, the program offers both in-person and virtual tracks covering diverse fields like digital media, backpack journalism, and editorial leadership. The mission of the workshop is to unite young journalists and faculty advisers, providing them with professional-grade training and the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers. In addition to rigorous classroom instruction, in-person participants engage in co-curricular activities such as media site visits and attending Broadway shows. The program emphasizes the "Columbia Experience," combining high-level academic instruction with the vibrant cultural landscape of New York City. Ultimately, it serves as a pipeline for students to transition from high school publication staffs to sophisticated, professional-level reporting and design.
