The mission of the Shea's Wonder Awards is to recognize, reward, and encourage excellence in high school musical theatre productions throughout the Buffalo, New York, region. As a regional program for the Jimmy Awards, it provides a unique platform for local students to gain professional-level recognition and feedback on their performances. The core activities include the adjudication of high school musicals by theatre professionals, the selection of finalists in various categories (such as Best Actor and Best Actress), and a culminating awards ceremony held at the historic Shea's Buffalo Theatre. The program's greatest value lies in its status as a feeder for the national competition in New York City, where the top winners from Buffalo compete against students from across the United States. This experience offers participants exposure to industry professionals, intensive training, and a chance to perform on a Broadway stage.
