AP English Language and Composition
About
The AP English Language and Composition course by UC Scout is designed to help students think and write analytically across a variety of written and oral communication modes. Its mission is to develop and enhance academic writing, critical reading, and rhetorical analysis skills, focusing primarily on nonfiction literature such as memoirs, essays, and editorials. Beyond traditional texts, students also explore the rhetoric of visual media, including photographs, films, and music videos, to understand how persuasion functions in a modern context. The curriculum is divided into two comprehensive semesters, each requiring approximately 70 hours of coursework to cover units ranging from basic grammar review to complex research paper writing. Students engage in core activities such as writing timed AP essays, conducting primary and secondary research, and analyzing the "SOAPS" (Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Speaker) of various texts. Ultimately, the program provides a rigorous, UC-approved pathway for students to master the art of argumentation and successfully challenge the AP exam.
