Applied Research in Science and Engineering (ARISE)
About
The NYU ARISE program is a prestigious summer initiative designed to immerse New York City high school students in the world of high-level scientific research. Its mission is to provide advanced STEM opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those historically underrepresented in these fields or lacking access to robust science resources. Over a multi-week period—including remote workshops and six weeks of intensive in-person lab work—students contribute to substantive research in fields such as robotics, bioengineering, and computer science. Beyond the laboratory, the program places a unique emphasis on communication, partnering with the Irondale Ensemble Project to train students in public speaking and scientific storytelling. Participants collaborate closely with faculty and graduate mentors, gaining technical expertise and a practical understanding of the research process. The experience concludes with a formal colloquium where students present their findings to an audience of peers, family, and academic experts, bridging the gap between high school learning and professional scientific practice.
