UCLA Health
About
The UCLA BrainSPORT Summer High School Research Internship aims to provide students with a deep dive into the world of clinical neuroscience and traumatic brain injury (TBI) research. Under the leadership of Dr. Christopher Giza, a world-renowned expert in pediatric neurology, interns participate in significant studies such as CARE4Kids, which investigates persistent post-concussion symptoms in adolescents. Throughout the summer, students learn the intricacies of patient recruitment, research data management, and the execution of complex study protocols in a real-world clinical setting. Interns are integrated into the team by attending weekly TBI lab meetings and collaborating with UCLA undergraduate and graduate medical students. The experience culminates in a final project where students present their findings on a specific research topic of their choice. The program requires a commitment of approximately 16 hours per week, fostering both technical research skills and professional mentorship.
