International Academic Competitions
About
The United States Geography Championships (USGC) is a premier academic competition designed to identify and challenge the top geography students in the nation. Its primary mission is to foster geographic literacy and select the four-member "Team USA" to compete at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo). Unlike buzzer-based bees, the USGC focuses on a student's ability to apply geographic concepts to real-world situations through rigorous written and multimedia examinations. The competition follows a two-stage format: a qualifying stage consisting of a multiple-choice exam or regional tournament, followed by a National Championship featuring a comprehensive two-hour exam. Core activities include analyzing maps, performing mathematical calculations related to geomorphology, and answering free-response questions on human and physical geography. The program offers a unique value by providing a direct pathway to international representation for high-achieving students.
